Functions of LNG Valve

Cryogenic Service
LNG valves must be able to withstand the extreme cold temperatures of LNG, which can cause ordinary materials to become brittle and prone to failure. Valves designed for cryogenic service are typically made from materials that remain ductile and reliable at these low temperatures. Double Block and Bleed (DBB) Design: LNG valves often incorporate a double block and bleed design, which means they have two sealing mechanisms and a bleed port between them. This configuration provides an extra layer of safety by isolating the process fluid and ensuring there is no leakage.

Fire Safety
In LNG facilities, there’s a risk of fire, and valves must be designed to withstand high temperatures and provide fire-safe operation. Fire-safe valves incorporate features that prevent leakage even under extreme heat conditions.

Application Areas
LNG valves are used in various stages of the LNG supply chain, including liquefaction, storage, transportation (LNG carriers), regasification terminals, and distribution to end-users.

Factors Affecting LNG Valve Performance

Temperature

LNG is extremely cold. The low temperature can cause the materials of the valve to contract, which can affect the sealing performance of the valve. That's why LNG valve equipment is usually made of materials that can withstand these low temperatures, such as stainless steel or nickel alloys.

Pressure

The high pressure in LNG systems also puts a lot of stress on the valves. Over time, this can cause wear and tear on the valve components, which can lead to leakage or other problems. Regular maintenance and inspection of the valves are essential to ensure their proper functioning.

Contaminants

LNG may contain contaminants such as dirt, sand, or other particles. These contaminants can get into the valve and cause damage to the sealing surfaces or other components. That's why it's important to have proper filtration systems in place to remove these contaminants before they reach the valves.

Material of LNG Valve

Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is one of the most widely used materials for cryogenic valves due to its excellent combination of strength, corrosion resistance, and toughness at low temperatures. Austenitic stainless steels, such as 304, 316, and 321, are particularly suitable for cryogenic applications. These alloys retain their ductility at temperatures as low as -269°C and exhibit excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion.

Nickel-Based Alloys
Nickel-based alloys, such as Inconel® and Monel®, are highly valued in cryogenic applications due to their exceptional strength, toughness, and resistance to corrosion. These materials remain ductile and fracture-resistant at ultra-low temperatures.

Copper and Aluminium Alloys
Copper and aluminium alloys are occasionally used in cryogenic valves, particularly for applications requiring excellent thermal conductivity. Aluminium 5083 is often chosen for cryogenic applications due to its good corrosion resistance and high strength-to-weight ratio.

Brass and Bronze
Brass and bronze alloys are commonly used in smaller cryogenic valves, particularly in low-pressure applications. Silicon bronze and aluminium bronze offer good corrosion resistance and moderate mechanical strength at low temperatures. These materials are often selected for their ease of machining and casting.

Titanium Alloys
Titanium and its alloys are gaining popularity in cryogenic valve applications due to their excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and low thermal expansion. Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V), for example, maintains its mechanical properties at cryogenic temperatures and is particularly suited for high-performance applications such as aerospace and medical industries.

FAQ

Q: What is a cryogenic valve for liquid nitrogen?

A: A cryogenic valve is a valve designed to operate reliably at extremely low temperatures, typically below -40°C (-40°F) and in many applications as low as -196°C (-320°F) for liquid nitrogen service, or lower still for liquid hydrogen and liquid helium applications.

Q: What is the maintenance cycle for the Cryogenic Valve for LNG Tank? Do you need special maintenance tools?

A: Under normal operating conditions (≤ 5 operations per day), the valve maintenance cycle is 8000 hours or 12 months (whichever comes first). During maintenance, only conventional tools are needed to replace the seals. We provide a specialized low-temperature seal installation kit (including positioning fixtures and torque wrenches), which can be quickly operated without the need for professional technicians.

Q: Can this valve adapt to the rapid filling conditions of LNG storage tanks (with large flow fluctuations)?

A: Absolutely possible. The valve flow channel has been optimized through CFD fluid simulation, resulting in a 15% increase in flow resistance coefficient (CV value). Under the filling condition of a maximum flow rate of 1200m ³/h, the pressure fluctuation behind the valve can be controlled within ± 0.5bar, avoiding damage to the sealing surface caused by "cavitation" due to excessive flow rate.
